Designing with PI Expert's Wizard Tool

Designing with PI Expert's Design Wizard

PI Expert's Design Wizard is an intuitive tool that guides users through the design process, allowing them to make key decisions and provide specifications needed to generate their design. This article will walk you through an example of using the Design Wizard with the InnoSearch 3 EP product family.

Selecting the Product and Breakdown Voltage

The first step in the Design Wizard is to select the product family. For this example, we will use the InnoSwitch 3 EP product family. PI Expert will use this selection throughout the remainder of the design.

Next, we need to select the breakdown voltage. We can choose from a variety of options, including 750 PaoI GaN, which utilizes PI's PaoI GaN wide band gap technology. For this example, we will select the 750 PaoI GaN option.

Configuring Input and Output Settings

The next step is to configure the input settings. We can choose from a universal input setting, which supports worldwide voltage standards, or select a specific input voltage. For this example, we will keep the universal setting.

We then need to specify our output specifications. We can enter the output power and number of outputs, as well as add additional outputs as needed. For this example, we will create a dual output supply with 20 volts and 3.25 amps, and an additional 5 volt and 1 amp output.

Design Settings and Component Selection

The Design Wizard then prompts us to enter design settings, such as the file name. We can also choose to leave default values or enter custom parameters.

We are then given the option to select from PIExpert's rich database of components, including transformers, resistors, and input bridge diodes. For simplicity, we will use all records for this example.

Optimization Methods and Magnetics Options

PIExpert applies machine learning to accelerate finding the best set of solutions. We can choose to leave this option enabled or disable it for more control over optimization methods.

We are also given options for magnetics, including wirewound or planar transformers, and a selection of core material options. Additionally, we can choose to add shield windings to reduce noise and improve EMI performance.

Finalizing the Design

Once we have completed the design settings and component selection, PIExpert will generate our design. We can then optimize and finalize our design using the optimization tools within the solutions window.

This concludes part one of this article. In part two, we will explore how to optimize and finalize our design using the optimization tools in PIExpert.
