Replacing Battery on GGMM D3 Portable Echo Dot Base

Repairing the GGMM D3 Portable Battery Base for Amazon Echo Dot Gen 3
In 2020, I reviewed the GGMM D3 portable battery base for the Amazon Echo Dot Gen 3 and it worked flawlessly for about a year and a half. However, recently it started making a high-pitched buzzing sound and would no longer accept charging. In this article, we'll go through the process of removing and replacing the battery to make the battery base work like new again.
Disassembling the Battery Base
To start, flip the unit upside down and remove the four rubber feet using a thin metal spudger or a small flathead screwdriver. The feet are stuck on with sticky tape and cover a few screws that need to be removed to open it up.
Next, take a small Phillips screwdriver and remove the four screws in the holes uncovered by removing the rubber feet. Gently tap the bottom of the unit, and the top cover should pop off.
Locating the Battery and Control Boards
Inside, you'll find the lithium-ion polymer battery pack and control boards. The battery is connected to the lower board just behind the status LEDs.
Removing the Battery Connector
To disconnect the battery, remove the two Phillips screws on the board and then remove the black cover over the LEDs. This clear plastic piece is the LED diffuser.
Gently pull each of the four diffusers away from the case to remove it. Be careful not to press down too hard on the tiny LEDs underneath, as they can shatter easily.
Once the diffuser is out, you can remove the PCB board. On the bottom, on the left side, is the connector for the battery. Grasp it firmly on the sides with needle-nose pliers and pull straight up to remove it.
Replacing the Battery
The original battery had a capacity of [insert capacity]. To replace it, you'll need to purchase a new battery with the same specifications. The replacement battery should have a similar voltage and ampere rating.
Before installing the new battery, make sure to remove any protective covering from the terminals.
Reassembling the Battery Base
To reassemble the battery base, follow these steps in reverse:
1. Replace the PCB board and reconnect the battery connector.
2. Put back the LED diffuser and replace the black cover over the LEDs.
3. Replace the two screws on the board and tighten them securely.
4. Put back the top cover, ensuring that the notched area is facing the back of the unit where the plugs are.
5. Replace the four screws on the bottom and tighten them securely.
6. Finally, carefully put the rubber feet back on.
Testing the Battery Base
Plug in the unit and check that the LEDs are blinking as the new battery is now accepting a charge. There should be no high-pitched buzzing sound.
The final test is to unplug the base and connect an Echo Dot to it. The device should power up fine, and you can test its functionality by asking Alexa a question.
