Upgrading the ROG Ally X with Hall Effect Sticks: A Comprehensive Guide

The ROG Ally X is a powerful handheld gaming console, but like many other devices, it's not immune to the issue of stick drift. However, thanks to a collaboration between GuliKit and ASUS, we now have access to hall effect sticks that can replace the stock potentiometer sticks in the device.

Tools and Materials Needed

• GuliKit Hall Effect Sticks (available at iFixit store)
• Phillips screwdriver
• Opening pick
• Anti-static wrist strap (optional)

Disassembling the ROG Ally X

To start, power down the device and flip it over onto its back. Remove the six Phillips screws from the bottom of the device, taking note that one of them is a captive screw that will remain attached to the case.

Next, run an opening pick along the bottom seam of the device, working your way around to the top. Be careful not to insert the pick more than 5mm into the device to avoid damaging any internal components.

Disconnecting the Battery and Flex Cable

Before proceeding, disconnect the battery connector to prevent any accidental power-ons. Unlike the original ROG Ally, the ROG Ally X does not cut power to the board when the back cover is removed, so this step is crucial.

Also, take note of the flex cable attached to the back cover and gently disconnect it from the device.

Removing the Thumbstick Boards

Locate the thumbstick boards on either side of the device and remove the flex connectors. Then, undo the three Phillips screws holding each board in place.

Take note that one of the screws on the left-hand side is longer than the others.

Installing the Hall Effect Sticks

The new hall effect sticks were designed by GuliKit in collaboration with ASUS and have been tested to work seamlessly out of the box.

Simply insert the new thumbsticks into the device, ensuring that the plastic pillars align correctly. Reinstall the three screws on each side, taking care not to mix up the longer screw on the left-hand side.

Reassembling the ROG Ally X

Reverse the steps above to reassemble the device. Make sure to reconnect the battery connector and flex cable, and clip the back cover into place.

Finally, replace the five Phillips screws on the bottom of the device, tightening the single captive screw securely.

Calibrating the Hall Effect Sticks

Once the device is reassembled, open up Armoury Crate and navigate to settings. Select calibration and follow the on-screen instructions to calibrate each stick.

This should resolve any issues with stick drift on your ROG Ally X.

• Standard Thumbsticks: These are replacement thumbsticks that offer a similar design and functionality to the stock ones.
• Tall Thumbsticks: These are longer than the standard thumbsticks, providing more control and precision for gamers with larger hands.
• Short Thumbsticks: These are shorter than the standard thumbsticks, suitable for gamers with smaller hands or those who prefer a more compact design.
• Textured Thumbsticks: These feature a unique texture that provides a better grip and control during gameplay.

1. Purchase the upgrade kit: Buy the desired thumbstick upgrade kit from an authorized ASUS retailer or online store.
2. Remove the stock thumbsticks: Carefully remove the stock thumbsticks from your ROG Ally X console. You may need to use a small screwdriver or other tool to release the retaining clips.
3. Install the new thumbsticks: Align the new thumbsticks with the mounting points on your console and gently press them into place until they click. Make sure they are securely fastened using the retaining clips.

• Choose the right upgrade kit: Make sure to select a compatible upgrade kit that matches your console's model and design.
• Use caution when handling the thumbsticks: The new thumbsticks may be more fragile than the stock ones, so handle them with care to avoid damage or breakage.

• Replacement thumbsticks (compatible with ROG Ally X)
• Torx screwdriver (for removing screws)
• Plastic spudger or similar tool (for prying open the controller)
• Cotton swabs and isopropyl alcohol (for cleaning)

1. Remove the screws from the back of the controller using a Torx screwdriver.
2. Gently pry open the controller shell using a plastic spudger, starting from the top edge and working your way around.
3. Carefully disconnect the ribbon cable connecting the analog sticks to the mainboard.

• Gently pull out the old thumbstick from its socket on the analog stick module.
• Carefully remove any adhesive or debris from the socket using cotton swabs and isopropyl alcohol.

• Insert the new thumbstick into its socket on the analog stick module, making sure it is securely seated.
• Apply a small amount of adhesive (if necessary) to secure the thumbstick in place.

1. Reconnect the ribbon cable connecting the analog sticks to the mainboard.
2. Reattach the controller shell using the screws you removed earlier.
3. Turn on the controller and test the new thumbsticks for proper function and feel.

• Actuation force: 2.5 N ( typical), 3.5 N (maximum)
• Travel distance: 8 mm
• Dead zone: ±0.5 mm

• If the new thumbsticks feel loose or unresponsive, check for proper seating and adhesive application.

• If issues persist after reassembly, try recalibrating the analog sticks through the ROG Ally X software.
